"Alice's Adventures under Ground" A Facsimile of the Original by Lewis Carroll
"Alice's Adventures under Ground: A facsimile of the original Lewis Carroll manuscript" Ann Arbor, MI: University Microfilms, Inc., 1964. Facsimile edition taken from Carroll's original manuscript.
Charles Dodgson AKA Lewis Carroll tells a story to 3 young girls while on a boating trip down the Isis River. The story is about a little girl named Alice, who falls down a hole to a strange land under the ground. Over the next two years Dodgson wrote out his tale by hand, including 37 of his own illustrations - some full-page.
He called it “Alice's Adventures under Ground”, and had it bound in leather. It was presented to Alice Liddell in November 1864, and she cherished it for over 60 years.
This original manuscript was presented to the British Museum. It is one of the British Library's most cherished literary treasures.
Friends who read the little book convinced Carroll to publish it. The story was edited, renamed (“Alice's Adventures in Wonderland”), illustrated by John Tenniel and published in 1865.
This gift boxed treasure provides insight into the origins of one of the most famous stories ever told. The text is a facsimile typeset in Dodgsons own script. It is in excellent condition, with the original slipcase as issued. The book and slipcase are bound in blue cloth. The binding is tight, and the pages are clean - without marks. It has a clear glassine protective cover with a small tear at the bottom of the spine. (See Photo)
